A new original movie from Pixar in what seems like ages. Had high hopes and immense anticipation. Pixar's first period piece, female protaganist etc just added to my curiosity. Safe to say, I really wanted to love this movie. Unfortunately Pixar has made it very difficult for me to do so.
Let me start by saying that this movie does not break any new ground, does not even come close to portraying a female protagonist in a new way. Disney's Mulan is still miles ahead of this.
To me it seems Brave may have been an unfortunate victim of confused film-making. Shoehorning multiple ideas and suggestions with complete disregard for what the film really needs to be. If true, it is probably saddest news for this 'director driven' studio. Not all movies can endure a behind-the-scenes game of 'Director's musical chair' and pull-off a Ratatouille I guess. Is this what the originator Brenda Chapman really envisioned?... we will probably never know for sure.
The movie just refuses to take itself seriously. Making light and comedy at the most inopportune times, poking fun at sincere moments and don't even get me started on the toilet humor. Looks like Pixar is using Brave to compensate for more than a decade of burp-free, fart-free, snort-free, nudity-free movies.
If one titled Disney's Mulan as 'Brave', I would get that... but renaming The Bear and the Bow to Brave seemed dumb even for the brightest marketing executive. Merida is hardly 'Brave" in the film and no amount of voice-overs at the beginning and ending over dramatic Scottish landscapes will convince me otherwise.
There are some very good moments in the film , like the opening picnic, Merida's archery challenge, her standing up to her mom etc which only shows glimpses of what the film could have been. But for the most part we end up with awkward comedy by a Bear Queen who's plight needed to come-off grave and dramatic to take this plot seriously. This is not Pixar's worst (Cars 2 still has that crown), but in my books it is definitely their most disappointing yet... simply because I had higher expectations.
So see it once, enjoy the beautiful production design, good voice work, interesting score, the lovely short La Luna that plays before it and a few heart felt sequences showing the film's potential. After Brother Bear and now Brave, it's clear that Disney/Pixar love turning humans into bears to teach them life lessons. Hopefully they will get it right the third time around... and may I suggest a different animal to help justify the comedy? A kangaroo perhaps?

In Theatres:"Sweeney Todd"(Review)
Burton's most satisfying film since i can remember. An adaption that actually works independently from the source material and has its own distinctive personality.Visually,i got what i wanted.Very Burton-esque indeed.Depp very closely resembles the animated Victor he played in Burton's"Corpse Bride".Every frame is a beautiful painting.
What i find amazing is, using the
same characters, story, music, lyrics as the original Broadway show,Burton creates a mood and feel that is far more darker, edgier and more apt. And i think the credit for that also goes to the actors and their execution of the songs.Though the singing voices arnt as impressive as their Broadway counterparts, but it does not take away from the film.I guess actors singing is better then singers acting.
He has also done a great job of truncating and eliminating some songs, but i do wish he would have manged to keep "The Ballad of Sweeney Todd" and "Kiss Me" in!
Specially since the former shows up in the score many a times anyways.
Its surely one of my favorite movies of the year!

In Theatres:"Bee Movie"(Review)
Barry the bee, suddenly decides to sue the human race for stealing their honey. Why?? Just cause he CAN! Not cause the bees are dying, or unemployed or suffering in any way. Maybe it would help if had a strong motive for doing so, other than the fact he had nothing better to do!?And yes..in this movie Bees CAN sue humans! I know its cartoon and all, but i could believe a rat wanting to be chef, but i could not buy into this bee suing humans business.
Jerry Seinfeld(Barry the bee) and Rene Renée Zellweger's(human florist)character don't really have too much of a chemistry either.A very under developed relationship. And how many animated movies have John Goodman and Patrick Warburton been in, in the last decade? Anyone counting? Can we shake things up a bit?!?
The whole movie just seems to be a platform from which Jerry Seinfeld can keep doing his comedy routine at 3244 words per minute.
The animation is ok.The designs are far more appealing than resent Dreamworks movies.
Though again i don't get the reason why Dreamwork's animated worlds have to be SO humanized.
Why do bees need hairdos?glasses?ties?cars and stairs to move around (though they do kinda try and justify this last issue, but didn't work for me)?
Remy(Pixar's Rataouille) never wore sewer boots,Nemo(Pixar's Finding Nemo) & his dad used the EAC ocean currents to transport and NOT an EAC Walkway belt or escalator!!
I just wish Dreamworks would respect the integrity of the world they try to create to make it more believable.
The movie wasn't bad, but just ok.Yet another forgettable animated movie!I laughed a few times.Thats about it.The plot is pretty thin and silly and extremely in-consequential.

TIFF'07: "Nocturna" (Film Review)

FINALLY saw this movie today at its North American Premiere at the Toronto Int.Film Festival! Long time in the making i guess...Amazing designs, very imaginative...was refreshing to see a 2D movie on the big screen after so long! The story was not to...(read more)o bad either, maybe a bit slow..but did not mind too much! The highlight has to be the designs. Thumbs up!:-)

In Theatres "Paris Je T'aime"
I think the biggest selling point/distraction (however u may choose to look at it) would be the diversity of the talent involved in this production (both, on and behind the camera).A collection 18 short films from an interesting mix of filmmakers. Representing their various visions of different kinds of love in different parts of Paris. All true to their own style of film making and story telling.
From camp horror and Wes Craven to a comical love story of mimes from Sylvian Chomet(Triplet...(read more)s Of Belville),from Gurinder Chadha to Gus Van Sant.
With an unexpected cast of actors that are fun to see, Natalie Portman, Catalina Sandino Moreno(Maria Full Of Grace),Bob Hoskins, Elijah Wood,Juliette Binoche,Steve Buscemi etc etc. Something for everyone.
I just wish they did not make a half hearted attempt to connect the stories, it wasn't even required to begin with. Quite the treat, and gotta love this poster!:-)

In Theatres: "Ratatouille" (Review)
Just saw an advance preview screening of this new Pixar/Brad Bird movie...In one word - "WOW"
In many ...MANY words-For me this will be a landmark film. not only does it represent Pixar's character animators at the top of their game, but it also marks the FIRST time (according to me) that character animation in CG is hitting the highs that the Nine Old Men did in the 50s and 60s at Disney...its really a gorgeous looking movie too with "heart" and a cool cool food critic voiced by Peter O'Toole (with his very apt, typewriter of death and coffin room) ,who has one of the most well written piece about Critics in general ,towards the end of the film.
The story is about achieving the "Impossible" dream, when everyone says u cant do it and about self doubt and conflict that probably every artist (and non-artist for that matter) goes through.
Though again, u have the Pixar formula with the whole buddy movie concept and what not...but i guess its amazing how they can make soooo many good movies by making variations of different degrees to the same concept!! i guess it goes to the credit...
And on a small but important side note, a personal request -
PIXAR , please, please ,oh please..stop using TV commercials/news programs to get the story/setup/ exposition established. I know it works really well, but its just too easy , and its really becoming my pet peeve against you cause you do it in EVERY movie(wherever u can justify a TV)...i mean come on, its old now, think of a new story telling device already,i know u can...PLEASE!
The end credits are very cool too and so is the short "Lifted" that plays before the movie!
Oh and i caught one in-joke..keep a lookout for a hidden cameo by Bon Voyage (the French bomber bad guy robbing the bank) from "The Incredibles"
Cant wait to see the movie again in 2 weeks on the opening weekend!

In Theatres: "POTC3: At World's End" (Review)
I could very well copy paste my review from last year for POTC 2 and it would quite apply to this one too(and that would not be a bad thing).People have been going on about how long and complicated and confusing it is...though i can see why they would say that, it dont stop me form endorsing this film.
This one is deffinately darker and has some cool swashbuckling Sp FX as usual. I thought the escape from Davy Jones' Locker and the Maelstrom battle was quite creative and cool.
Now days when all franchises are being milked to death with one sequel after another,i think its not a bad when the worst critisizm for this 3rd installment in this very "Original" franchise is that it has way TOO many ideas which havnt been devloped to their best possibities.
Honestly am sick of seeing bad super hero movies and the sorts. They rely on the built in fan base for a big opening and special effects with no real idea/story at the core.Summer movies dont have to be like that.
SO u can understand my preference for a film with too many(though not fully capitalised on) ideas over the former.
The probelm (i feel)with the last 2 Pirate films seems to be that they were rushed.Rushed to meet release dates and much of the story evolved on the fly.
Though this Trilogy is now over, if there r to be more POTC movies, i hope the writers get the time to hammer out some really well thought out scripts. These 2 writers seem capable and creative enough in my opinion.
SO far they have created a coolworld with very interesting and fresh mythology /characters, & i coudl really see future POTC movies being really terrific adventure movies if done the right way!
In a nut shell, after investing in 2 Pirate movies, the concluding part was a promise well kept.I was entertained and was very satisfied with the resolution.
And yes..do stick around till the end of the End Credits, for a short scene which works as a very nice book-end to the very first scene of the very first POTC.Its really amazing how that 2 min shot alone, kinda makes it clear who the whole trilogy was about.
Perfect end to this 3 part story.

In Theatres: "Shrek The Third" (Review)
Was not the biggest fan of the original Shrek, but it kinda grew on me over the years.Though i did think Shrek 2 was quite good. I dunno what i was xpecting from Shrek 3, but after hearing only bad things online and 43% freshness rating on RottenTomatoes, maybe i reduced my expectations. So when i went to see it, i was pleasantly surprised.I found myself being quite entertained, and i did laugh more than just a couple of times. The designs were as ugly as Shrek stuff usually is, but had some very nice animation moments , like the Frog King dying sequence!
Am not sure if this movie "needed" to be made.Cuase Shrek 2 advanced the plot considerably from Shrek 1 but am not sure if 3 acheives the same in terms of Character deevlopment, their arcs etc etc.
All said and done, it was a fun 90min(or whatver its running time)
and it did not create any strong reactions in me (postive or negative) to write anymore about it.
And :Shrek 2 is still the best Shrek movie for me
:"Meet The Robinsons", Best Animated Movie of 2007...so far
: Of the 3 major 3-quels of the summer (Spidey3,Shrek3,Pirates3), Shrek 3 is in the lead...so far

In Theatres: "Spider Man 3" (Review)
I guess it must be summer! Its been a while since i had my intelligence insulted by a film. With glaring plot wholes, boring, underdevloped characters SM3 really tests ur patience for the looooongest 2 1/2 hrs at the movies.
Specialy when the movie was being advertised as this explorations of this cool darker side of SM/Peter , inner conflict and all..and all u get is a shockingly ridiculous cheezzzy ,camp thing...u cant help but feel dissapointed.
Have nothing against cheezy, but if u gonna do it, do it well...like Moulin Rouge...its cheezy as hell but its a masterpiece!
Even the SpecialFx and stuff..nothing havnt seen before, a couple of scenes stood out, but other than that, way too many fast cuts with wrapped in an overload of sound effects, which leads me to think that even the director did not knwo what was happening in those shots.
Charcters seem so unmotivated, come and go , cry and do whatver they have to. It took 2 .5 hrs for the sand man charcter to say "i really did not want this" and he then just blows away!
after 2.5 hrs in hell, is that the climax/resolution i get??? come on!!
i dont even wanna talk about "Venom".. pretty dumb!
The film was struggling to find its style and the dumbest screenplay did not help.
I guess if Spidey 1 & 2 weren't good, i would not have been so disspointed with this movie.
A terrible waste of talent , time and money.

In Theatres: "Meet The Robinsons" (Review)
What? An animated movie about time travel and NO cute fuzzy bears, lions, penguins, fishes ,rats? No burping and other gass-y gags?An animated movie which is awesome but not by PIXAR?Obviously, such a movie cannot exist, right? WRONG!!!!!!
Meet The Robinsons was the most satisfying "DISNEY" movie since forever.Though its subject isnt really new, but it seems strangely fresh anyways!
It has a pretty complicated story line about time travel and a story set in the past present and the future.Such time lines are often very difficult to write for, but to the credit of the director and the story dept. they do so without making the ending be either obvious or contrived.
The story has heart, some cool villian animation a few really unexpected surprises, a spectacular and satisfying(which is just so rare in movies now days, animated or otherwise) ending, a fun soundtrack by the likes of Danny Elfman and Rufus Wainwright. What more can one ask for?
I liked it more than most rescent animated movies, even more than last years "Cars" which was my fav last year.
And the whole see it in "Disney Digital 3D" thing.I saw the movie in both formats. The normal and the 3D. And i have to say, 3D wins hands down.
The 3D really isnt used hear as a gimmick with things coming out at you every 33 seconds just cause they can. The 3D is used to just enhance the experience and used in a very natural way. Making the experience visually immersive. And it works amazingly well. Makes you wanna watch ALL movies like this (am sure thats gonna happen soon , in 2 years tops).
And if you dont have enough reasons to go see it already, the 3D version plays a 1953 Donald Duck and Chip&Dale short called "Working For Peanuts" in 3D!!
OMG, traditional 2D animation looks sooooo gorgeous with those damn 3D glasses.Amazing flat multiplane-ing happening. VERY VERY cool!
I am glad to see Disney Feature Animation returning to form.So dont let a couple of bad character designs , ugly posters and misleading trailers hold u back. GO ahead and Meet The Robinsons TODAY!

In Theatres : "The Last Kiss" & "Scoop"(Review)
After weeks of a dry spell at the cinemas, things are finally begining to pick up.Movies that actually make u wanna go check them out, some bad , some good but atleats have your interest.
So after a couple of disspointments (Hollywoodland, The Black Dahlia), i saw a couple of movies back to back which i really liked....The Last Kiss & Woody Allen's latest Scoop. Also since both the movies kinda-sorta fall in the same genre, thought i'd do a semi-common review.
Both these movies boast of no fancy special effects or fantastical settings and dramatic twists & turns. Very simple, linear charchter driven plots and with intresting screenplays.
Though they differ in tone, TLK (The Last Kiss, not to be confused with the Lion movie) is a bit more on the serious/mature side and Scoop being ur typical Woody Allen nutty comedy caper (quite the contrast to his last last year's Match Point ).
What i liked about the TLK was, though it fits into the cliche : guy having perfect life has a mid-life crisis, panicks and takes some worng turns...its really well written and the charcters and their motives are quite belivable.
The supporting cast also have their own issues to deal with & do it well.Great performances by all the major characters.I really liked Tom Wilkinson as the father in a very small but important role.People dont always make the right choices, and there are consequences, and the movie does not have to have a perfect ending. It was slick and honest. Highly recommended!
Scoop on the other hand is just a breeze to watch! It aint gonna alter the course of your life, but it will be a fun 90 mins. i cant seem to get enough of Woody Allen's sense of humour.People say its the same stuff every time, but i think if it aint broke, dont fix it!
Its silly, and it KNOWS its silly and just goes all out. It hilarious to just see his expressions as he does those magic tricks at the begining of the movie. I dont think that was meant to be funny, but he just makes me smile! I throughly enjoyed it, ist totally his movie, Hugh Jackman & Scarlet Johansen though good are over-shadowed by Woody Allen's presence.See it to relax and see how a non- lowbrow movie can make you laugh just as much!

In Theatres : POTC Dead Man's Chest (Review)
Yes it a bit too long, yes its a bit too overly complicated (or tries to be)... BUT i thouroughly enjoyed it!Considering the genre it belongs to...i think its the best "Summer film" of this summer over the impossible missions and super heroes.
I LOVED the designs & the effects on Davy Jones & his crew! So far best VFX of the year goes to ILM for this!
Some real cool landscapes...& it sure "LOOKED" like it was all REALLY shot on location in the Bahamas and not copy pasted a mountain from New Zealand , a river Europe & the sky from Timbuktoo, and i think keeping it REAL like that, does make a difference.
The best part i like about this this franchise is that its not based on existing & over exploited source materials .And its refreshing to a see a whole new world and charcters being created.
Granted its based on Walt Disney/Marc Davis and other Imagineer's work...but that hardly counts when we compare it to most of the source materials of other franchises.
Besides the Theme Park attraction did not offern much in terms of story and charcter.
I wish more studios and writers put on tehir thinking caps & try and give us more original stuff.
They dont have to be perfect, but it would be nice to see what New stuff people can come up with.Just cause its based on existing material, does not mean its gonan be great (referring to most of teh summer movies of this year or any other year for that matter).
Am not crazy about the cliffhanger ending...though i was pleasantly surprised & excited to see that an older character re-introduced in the end & look forward to seeing him in POTC 3: World's End, May 2007!

In Theatres: Superman Returns (Review)
So how do u review a movie which u were really looking forward too...but after seeing it, u neither LOVE it enough or HATE it enough...i guess basically what am trying to say is, does not draw a very strong reaction in u.I liked it...a few loop wholes..liked the visual fx, teh jet sequence was tres cool, however i am not sure how Lois could survive all that mid air bashing ...i guess sleeping with Superman makes u a demi -Superwoman?
Like the casting...Routh sure looks the part, dunno if he can act...i dont think he needs to in this role anyws.
Singer did mange to make Supes interesting considerng he is so goodie-goodie and lacking a sense of mystery or a darker side.
I was extremely dissppointed with the climax or the lack of it rather. Maybe thats why i walked out feeling a little short changed. What was the climax? Supes in a hospital bed?? will he live? ooooh i REALLLLLY wonder!!!?
I mean there were so many possibilities the moment he lands on that Crystal Rock thingie...but all that ends up happening is he gets bashed and stabbed & left for dead like in any alley way in any gangster movie set in a NYC-esque city!
Come on..this is SUPERMAN!
Also, i wish the kid was exploited a bit more too...he coudl have been an amazing part of the cilmax. He just seems to be in the worng movie for most of the time...staring at people as if he was in The Omen or something!?
The only reason i think he was just used as a tease & the movie was so restrained/loose ended in soooo many ways is, that proabbly this is just a set up for a trilogy or something. But even then...i wanted to be knocked out, and that didnt happen!
I like some of the nostalgic stuff like ,the nod to Reeve with the final closing shot of Superman smiling at the camera before he exits ,the very satisfying use of teh JW theme & cues mixed with new material, the design of the Opening Credits etc etc.
Liked Spacey enough to want to see more of him...and the canible dog was a surprise touch!

In Theatres :"Cars" (Review)
I liked it!!!Visually stunning!
Cool soundtrack....bucket loads of heart (yes inspite of it being about talking CARS!).
The best animated movie of the year so far, and possibly one of the best movies of the year too.
A bit too long maybe...could have been 15 mins shorter or so but since u genuinely end up feeling for the characters and their predicaments...i can seem to forgive that.
Though i do think the "PIXAR FORMULA" is begining to show now...maybe TOO clearly!...and i think this is the perfect time for them to wake up to that and shake things up a bit before it does them in and thats is in terms of their story telling devices as well as their visual style.
But i am glad to get a break from yet ANOTHER animated movie with cute CG animals!
Monsters Inc Still remains my fav.Pixar movie and Bugs's Life my least. "Cars" probably fits somewhere right in the centre of that scale.
So irrespective of the box office returns...those who keeping score...PIXAR is still 7 for 7 in my books...though i wont add "and going strong"!

In Theatres : X3(Review)
Hmmmm...i loved the first 2 X-Men movies directed by Bryan Singer. A fine balance of popcorn Summer Entertainment and beleivable Character Development leading to a very satisfying movie watching experience. So its was very unforunate for me to find that the 3rd and supposedly the final chapter in this franchise did not do the same!
This one was strictly "OK"...there were just too many things missing...
A) Where was Nightcrawler from X2? is he not there just cause the actor could not make it back?
B) Whats with the pigeon guy..?? why was he even put in if he was not gonna be explored or developed. He seemed far more interesting than the chick running through walls!
C)The "Fur Ball"...u gotta be kidding...his presence on screen drew the most(& there where many)unrequired laughs and snickers from me! not good!
D) Phoenix...i waited the whole movie for a cool..jaw hitting the floor "Phoenix Moment"...but all i got was her floating in the air crying "save me"& everyone around her running and turning into what looked like garnulated pepper balls! Phoenix was just not FIERY enough for me!
E)And at the end,I wonder how those mutant kids will learn to hone their talents in that school with the bald kid there now sucking in all their powers! Could be quite annoying!
I know this review sounds like its coming from someone who does not know the X MEN comics too well and thats true! SO,i dunno if thats how prof Xavier ,Magnetto, Cyclops etc actually meet their end or not...but it sure did not seem convincing in the film.I mean,it seemed too forced..lets just kill peeople off or turn them into "Homosapiens" (which BTW is so simple, like pushing a button...and EUREKA! instant de-mutation!) cause we need to raise the stakes and wind up the franchise!
Cause somehow it seems the story did not demand all these deaths!and that too in such a not-so-glorious fashion!! i mean...they were such super powerful beings ...and u just put a needle in him and thats it?!
Hell, its MAGNETTO we r talking about!!!!
It was not JUST not built up enough...their death was not the pay off that was required to satisfy the script...and i am the last person to have problems with killing off primary characters!
I wish the director/writers chose to explore the very intersting concept about the cure, and the arguements for and against it rather then "lets just kill the next Xmen we can think off"!
I just hope now that Superman Returns is worth this sacrifice, cuase then i will hold Bryan Singer resposible for ruining 2 movies this summer, one by directing it and one by NOT directing!! Now, that would be a first!;-)

In Theatres : Mission Impossible III (Review)
And Summer starts!!Yes its a BIG studio, BIG star ,BIG budget BIG franchise but...small movie!
There were no real BIG explosive blow u away "did u see that ?" kinda special effects moments which one expects from movies of this stature.
Director JJ Abrams of Alias/Lost fame sticks to his Alias formula.
The movie is ineresting no doubt, holds ur attention the whole time and to the director's credit its cause of the "pure" action and the circumstances and the story telling thread and no sp.fx jazz!
Am not saying thats bad, its great!! but we know that Abrams is good with that, he has already established that in his Tv shows...how about shaking it up a bit for the big screen?
Essentially...its like watching Alias on the big screen with Tom Cruise instead of Sydney Bristow( Jeniffer Garner).
Its amazing to see how blatantly Abrams uses the very same devices and techniques and creates the similar moods with the score, colours, lighting and sets as Alias!!
Among many other things,is it a co-incidence that Alias opened with the main character strapped to a chair being interrogated?
or people having "charges in their head" a la Will Tippin from 2 weeks ago in Alias?
Why not just make a big screen version Alias instead?!

In Theatres : The Wild (Review)
OK...if u told me that one day that i would i be writing a postive review of this film ... i would laugh a hearty laugh. It was mixture of Finding Nemo, Madagascar and genrerous helpings of many Lion King moments...
But thats very usual for animated movies now days. I am not sayin "The Wild" is a great movie...but it surely does not deserve the negative goodwill most of us have for it.
It looks like real hard work and its paid off well. Yes, the style is not to my preference , being more towards photo realiasm than a stylised look. This is the only reason why i might prefer Madagascar over The Wild. In all other aspects Wild surely surpasses Madagascar or even the rescent animated movies like Ice Age 2.
And even though it's style is NEAR photo realism. it looks consistent and good and is still better than gag inducing designs from some Dreamworks films...Sharktale anyone?!
Am not sure which come first...Madgascar or The Wild...but i dunno why..i think i belive the fact that The Wild was in production b4 Madagascar but got delayed and Madagascar beat it to the theatres.
In either case, i think CORE in Toronto had surely proved themselves as an able feature producing studio...and i would surely look forward to their next endevaour...and Disney and Mr.Lasseter need not be TOO embaressed of The Wild, we have seen a lot worse off late.

In Theatres (Review)-Ice Age:The Meltdown
STORY! STORY! STORY! Why ,Why OH Why cant these people get that straight? Especially in Animation when the film is in production for 3-4 yrs if not more so there shoudl be nothing that isnt thougt through...also when even teh smallest element is under the control of the director/artists!!Then why this crap? Are people sleeping through the production?Ice Age 2 is GORGEOUS to look at .I might even go to say its one of the most visually simple/beautifully designed CG movie yet...but then whats the point if there is no such thing as a "STORY" or a good reason to make this movie other than to cash in on excisting hit! The jokes are so juvenille and done and cliche!! Though Scrat does provide welcome releif and sometimes Sid too...but,geez!
Whats the excuse this time? Will the filmmakers blame Michael Eisner and "Executive Interferance" for this mess too? Cuase it wont work...wrong studio!..or wait, maybe its Rupert Murdock to blame here. For too long have animation filmmakers /directors tried to get away by blaming things on exectives..i am sure they did mess up many things...but i dont think its JUST that anymore.
I just feel bad for the aniamtors and other artists who work on such productions. They put so many years of their lives into such products...only to see the storytellers drop the ball at their end! Its a sad sad sad situation. What a waste of beautiful art and time and money!

In Theatres (Review)-V For Vendetta
I must admit, when I first saw the trailer for this movie it looked awfully unappealing and ridiculous with a guy with a strange "Joker-esque"mask and a bad wig in a trailer for movie which seems quite "Serious" and not some slasher comedy! Ofcourse,it did not help that I was totally ignorant of the fact that this is based on a graphic novel and was totally unawares of the world, the character and the themes it dealt with.
I guess never judge a book by its cover. I was pleasantly surprised...It was quite a cool film. With its many political ideas which I have thought about myself on many occasions. Yes there was a lot of talking, but I did not mind it cause I think they had strong cast which delivered their lines with just the right energy and force.
And I got used to the strange grin on the mask after the first 10 mins...The action was cool...And NOT totally pointless for a change. Though the ideas were too many & not indepth, I did not mind it. Cause I thought I could see where the filmmakers were coming from and generally where they were trying to take this film. I saw shades of phantom of The Opera, Beauty & the Beast, Shyamalan's The Village in it and more...And I don't mean that in a bad way.
There are a handful of cheesy moments(like everyone taking off their masks in unison to see the fireworks as the 1812 overture reaches its crescendo)and plot loop holes...But not overwhelming enough for me to not recommend this movie.
It tries to be a fun "super hero movie", with something to say...Rather something RELEVANT to say and does a not-so-bad job of it.
